What will I study?

Learning A-Level French with us is not just about vocabulary and grammar. You will learn about history, culture, philosophy, politics, society, art, literature, music, geography, traditions and festivals. You will see the world in a completely different way and broaden your horizons and open your mind.

In the first year, you will study two main themes and six sub-topics. You will look at the changes in French society, changes in family structures, education, and the world of work. You'll then explore the political and artistic cultures in French-speaking countries, pay particular interest to music, media, festivals and traditions. You will also complete an in-depth study of Mathieu Kassovitz’s cult film “La Haine”.

In your second year, you will study two further themes and six sub-topics. You will look at immigration and France's multicultural society. You will study the positive impact of immigration on French society, look at the challenges of immigration and integration in France, and explore the far-right theme, occupation and resistance, the Vichy regime, and the French Resistance. In addition, you will undertake an in-depth study of the contemporary novel “No et Moi” by Delphine De Vigan

What previous qualifications or experience do I need?

A GCSE grade 6 in French. Candidates without GCSE French but who are bilingual (can write and speak French fluently) will also be considered at interview.

How will I be assessed?

Throughout the course you will be given weekly homework and regular tests. At the end of the two years you will sit the final exams. Paper 1: Listening, reading and translation into English(2 hours). Paper 2: Written response to works and translation into French (2hrs 40mins). Paper 3: Speaking (18 mins)

What qualification will I achieve?

Once you have completed this course, you will achieve an A-Level in French graded A* - E.

What can I do after completing this course?

Languages are in great demand in the modern workplace and having an A-Level in a language will improve your prospects of employment within the UK or abroad. A language qualification provides an opportunity to progress to language courses at university as single or joint honours degrees.

Are there any extra costs?

You will be expected to buy a course book, a grammar book and one literary text. There may be additional costs for an optional study or exchange visit to France.
