This is an innovative, new industry-focussed course for those who have creative ability, an interest in developing and researching make-up design ideas and who wish to pursue a career as a professional make-up artist. It covers all aspects of make-up techniques to provide access to film, television, stage, photography and other media.

What will I study?

This is an exciting Level 3 course that will teach you a range of make-up techniques for the theatre, film, television, and the photographic arena.

More specifically, you will learn how to apply media make-up, camouflage make-up, fashion and photographic make-up, prosthetic pieces, air-brush make-up, and face and body paint.

You will need to be prepared to work in and out of class to build a portfolio of your work. You will develop your own portfolio and creative ideas supported by guest speakers, industry experts and a visit to a professional show in London. You will have the opportunity to take part in competitions and showcase your skills at the college Hair and Beauty Show.

What previous qualifications or experience do I need?

Minimum five grade 4-9 at GCSE or successful completion of the Level 2 course, and English and maths at grade 4.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed during written, practical, and observed practical work. You will be required to produce a portfolio of practical examples and reference material, and there will be two exams during the course.

What qualification will I achieve?

Once you have completed this course, you will achieve a Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Media Make-up Artistry.

What can I do after completing this course?

Once you have finished this course, you will be able to find employment in make-up roles in the fashion industry, TV and film, print media, retail or as a freelance make-up artist.

Alternatively, you could progress to university to study the subject in more detail.

Are there any extra costs?

At the start of the term, you will need to purchase a uniform, a professional make-up artistry kit, and a supporting beauty therapy kit. Attendance is compulsory on some trips and visits, which is £25.

Work experience is a compulsory part of this course, and you will need to source your own placement under the guidance of your tutor.
