What will I study?

On this course, you will study the content of the new A-Level Edexcel Maths syllabus which consists of the study of Pure Mathematics and the study of the application of mathematics in Mechanics and Statistics.

You will develop your ability to spot patterns and structure in mathematics, while learning about mathematical modelling and the applications of mathematics in mechanics and statistics. The skills you will develop are in great demand and are central to technology, engineering, medicine and many aspects of everyday life.

The key topics you will learn about are:

  • Algebra and functions
  • Coordinate geometry
  • Differentiation and integration
  • Sequences and series
  • Trigonometry
  • Vectors
  • Exponentials and logarithms
  • Mechanics
  • Statistics

What previous qualifications or experience do I need?

A GCSE grade 6 in Maths.,Our general entry requirements to study 3 A-Levels or any mixed level 3 programme are: 5 GCSEs grade 4-9 including English Language and/or Maths at grade 5. Subject specific entry criteria may also apply. Our general entry requirements to study 4 A-Levels are: 6 GCSEs grade 4-9 including English Language and Maths at grade 6. Subject specific entry criteria may also apply.

How will I be assessed?

At the end of the year two, you will take three papers, two with pure content and one with applied content. You will have two hours to complete each paper.

What qualification will I achieve?

A level Maths qualification is achieved at the end of the second year of study. A Level Maths course (two years) content

• Pure Mathematics 1 (Paper code: 9MA0/01) • Pure Mathematics 2 (Paper code: 9MA0/02)

Content overview of the two pure papers:

Proof, Algebra and functions, Coordinate geometry in the (x, y) plane, Sequences and series, Trigonometry, Exponentials and logarithms, Differentiation, Integration, Numerical methods, Vectors

• Statistics and Mechanics (Paper code: 9MA0/03)

Content overview for Statistics and Mechanics

Section A: Statistics Statistical sampling, Data presentation and interpretation, Probability, Statistical distributions, Statistical hypothesis testing

Section B: Mechanics Quantities and units in mechanics, Kinematics, Forces and Newton’s laws, Moments

What can I do after completing this course?

Maths A-Level is a great qualification to have to gain access to a number of degree subjects at university. You will be able to access subjects such as Maths, Science, Engineering and Computing, and can also help you in other professions such as medicine, economics and psychology.

Are there any extra costs?

You may need to upgrade your calculator from the one you used at GCSE. The minimum requirement is the Casio FX-991EX (around £20), although we recommend a graphical calculator such as the Casio FX-CG50 (around £100). You may wish to discuss calculator options with your teacher at the start of the course before buying a new calculator. We also recommend that you buy textbooks following the Edexcel course. Please contact the Maths department if you would like any advice on textbooks or calculators.

Additional Info

We will set you some work for the summer holidays to help you prepare for the transition from GCSE to A-Level Maths. We will send you this work in a study pack just before the end of Year 11. There is a test on this work in September which will help you to check if the course is right for you. The test just checks whether you are prepared to work hard, it isn’t there to catch you out.
