What will I study?

Why does an autumn leaf turn red? How does soap clean us? Why is a diamond hard? The study of chemistry is driven by the desire to explain the behaviour of the materials around us.

Over the two years of the course you will develop your understanding of how science works in the laboratory as well as in the world outside. You will gain a detailed understanding of a discipline that will remain at the forefront of scientific development, and you will be able to understand how the behaviour of atoms and molecules determines the world we live in, our shape and size, and even how we feel on a given day. You will get into the detail of physical and organic chemistry to understand the transition of elements while sharpening your analytical skills.

You will study topics including:

  • The inorganic chemistry of main group and transition elements
  • The organic chemistry of functional groups and synthesis
  • The physical chemistry of kinetics, equilibria and energetics
  • Analytical chemistry including spectroscopic techniques

What previous qualifications or experience do I need?

A GCSE grade 5 in Maths, Combined Science 66 or Chemistry grade 6.

How will I be assessed?

Your assessments will be entirely through exams

What can I do after completing this course?

Completion of this course may facilitate access onto degrees courses in Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Chemical engineering, Dietetics and Pharmacy. Alternatively, you could progress onto an apprenticeship or employment in laboratory-based roles.

There are a number of career opportunities available to you follow the course such as working in the field of medicine, becoming a Biochemist, Chemical engineer, Geochemist, Hazardous waste manager, or even into dentistry.

Are there any extra costs?

There may be some additional costs during the course for trips and visits to further your learning
