Sport and Coaching Development Level 3 Diploma

This course will develop students' knowledge, skills and behaviours within Sport, Coaching and Physical Development. Students will learn from a mixture of theoretical and practical application of knowledge, making full use of the excellent sport and fitness facilities based at Eastbourne sports park. The course offers the flexibility to assess students in a variety of methods, including practical observations, production of podcasts and written assignments. The course allows for excellent progression within sport and physical activity, with the course providing many transferable skills for different employment routes.

What will I study?

This qualification consists of a number of units which are the academic equivalence of 1.5 A-Levels during the 1st year of this course. Students will study a range of units such as: Sports coaching; Technical and tactical skills in sport; Principles of anatomy and physiology; fitness training and programming; strength and conditioning. Students will learn through theory and practical application, with all students developing their sport coaching skills to help them coach or lead sport activities in the local community. All students will complete a compulsory 30 hours of voluntary work experience during the year, with all students expected to source their own work experience placement.

What previous qualifications or experience do I need?

Minimum five grade 4-9 at GCSE or successful completion of the Level 2 course, and English or maths at grade 4.

How will I be assessed?

Students are assessed continuously throughout the academic year, enabling them to build their grade profile over time. Assessment methods are varied and may include written assignments, presentations, and practical observations. There are no externally assessed examinations on this course.

What qualification will I achieve?

Students will achieve a Diploma which is the equivalent of 1.5 A levels on this initial one year course. The qualification awards students UCAS points based on the overall grade achieved for their 1st year.

What can I do after completing this course?

The majority of students progress to a second year of study to complete the Level 3 Extended Diploma, which is equivalent to a further 1.5 A Levels. Students who successfully complete both the Diploma and Extended Diploma will therefore achieve a qualification equivalent to 3 A Levels.

The qualification attracts UCAS Tariff points, which are awarded based on students' combined achievements across both years of study.

This course provides the knowledge, skills, and practical experience required to progress to university and study a wide range of sport-related degree programmes, including Sports Coaching, Sport and Exercise Science, and Sports Management. It also offers a direct pathway into employment in roles such as Sports Coach, Sports Activity Instructor, and Sports Development Officer. Some students choose to stay on at college and study the Personal Training qualification.

Are there any extra costs?

Cost of the course will be approximately £100 which covers uniform which all students must purchase during enrolment. Further information will be given to students at enrolment.

Additional Info

All students studying on this course are expected to participate in one of the campus sports academies or take part in weekly sports enrichment activities. The course is particularly well suited to students who are members of the sports academies, providing opportunities to receive weekly coaching, learn from experienced coaches, and apply their knowledge and skills within their sport qualification.

In addition, students are encouraged to undertake voluntary work with local sports clubs, teams, or primary schools. These experiences help to develop valuable employability and leadership skills, enhance personal development, and strengthen university and employment applications.

Students enrolled on a sport qualification will also receive a free student gym membership at Eastbourne Sports Park. This provides access to the gym for timetabled lessons as well as additional use throughout the week. The gym is equipped with state-of-the-art Technogym equipment, giving students access to high-quality facilities to support their training, fitness, and overall sporting performance.
