Sport and Exercise Science Level 3 Foundation Diploma

Students will study a specialist Sport & Exercise Science qualification that provides in-depth knowledge across a wide range of scientific disciplines within sport. This course is ideal for students who are passionate about sport and have a particular interest in the science behind athletic performance. Topics include Biomechanics, Sports Massage, Sport Psychology, and Exercise Physiology, helping students develop both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

In the first year, students will study the Foundation Diploma in Sport & Exercise Science, which is equivalent to 1.5 A Levels and attracts UCAS Tariff points for progression to higher education.

Following successful completion of the Foundation Diploma, students can progress to the Extended Diploma in their second year. This qualification is worth a further 1.5 A Levels, enabling students to achieve the equivalent of 3 A Levels over two years and providing an excellent pathway to university, apprenticeships, or careers within the sport, health, and exercise science industries.

What will I study?

The BTEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Sport & Exercise Science provides students with an in-depth understanding of the scientific principles that underpin sport, exercise, and athletic performance. The course combines theoretical knowledge with practical application, preparing students for progression to higher education or careers within the sport and fitness industry.

Throughout the course, students will develop valuable practical, analytical, and communication skills through practically-based activities, fitness testing, presentations, and written assignments. Students will learn how scientific principles are applied to improve sporting performance, support athlete development, and promote health and wellbeing.

This qualification is ideal for students with a passion for sport who are interested in the science behind human performance and are considering a future in sport, health, fitness, coaching, or higher education.

What previous qualifications or experience do I need?

Minimum five grade 4-9 at GCSE or successful completion of the Level 2 course, and English, maths and science at grade 4.

How will I be assessed?

Students are assessed continuously throughout the academic year, enabling them to build their grade profile over time. Assessment methods are varied and may include written assignments, presentations, and practical observations. There are two externally set exams which students must pass to allow for progression to year two of the course.

What qualification will I achieve?

What can I do after completing this course?

The BTEC Level 3 Sport & Exercise Science qualification provides students with the knowledge, practical skills, and experience required to progress confidently into higher education, apprenticeships, or employment within the sport, health, and fitness sectors.

Many students choose to progress to university to study sport-related degree programmes such as Sport and Exercise Science, Sports Coaching, Physiotherapy, Sports Therapy, Strength and Conditioning, Physical Education, Sports Management, or Nutrition and Health.

For those wishing to enter the workplace, the qualification can provide a pathway into a variety of careers, including Sports Coach, Sports Development Officer, Activity Instructor, Leisure and Recreation Officer, and roles within the wider health and wellbeing sector.

Students may also choose to pursue higher or degree apprenticeships within the sport and fitness industry, enabling them to gain valuable workplace experience while continuing their education. Some students choose to study the Personal Training course on offer at the Eastbourne campus.

The analytical, scientific, and practical skills developed throughout the course are highly valued by both universities and employers, making this qualification an excellent foundation for a successful future in sport and exercise science.

Are there any extra costs?

There will be a on-off cost of approximately £100 which covers sports kit for students to wear for lessons.. Additional information will be given at enrolment.

Additional Info

All students studying on this course are expected to participate in one of the campus sports academies or take part in weekly sports enrichment activities. The course is particularly well suited to students who are members of the sports academies, providing opportunities to receive weekly coaching, learn from experienced coaches, and apply their knowledge and skills within their sport qualification.

In addition, students are encouraged to undertake voluntary work with local sports clubs, teams, or primary schools. These experiences help to develop valuable employability and leadership skills, enhance personal development, and strengthen university and employment applications.

Students enrolled on a sport qualification will also receive a free student gym membership at Eastbourne Sports Park. This provides access to the gym for timetabled lessons as well as additional use throughout the week. The gym is equipped with state-of-the-art Technogym equipment, giving students access to high-quality facilities to support their training, fitness, and overall sporting performance.
