Frequently Asked Questions

FAQS

Q: How many subjects can I pick?

A: You can pick up to 4 subjects each day. Please note that some subjects will span across two sessions and will be highlighted on the booking form as ‘DOUBLE’ subjects.

Q: The subject I want isn’t available.

A: Each of the courses has a set capacity and spaces are given on a first-come-first-served basis. It could be that the course you have chosen is full. If this is the case, please have a look to see if there are any other time slots available for your chosen course. Alternatively, you can make amends to your timetable up until Sunday 1st June, so you can check back anytime until then to see if a space has become available before this date.

Q: Why can’t I see all the subjects listed in Hastings?

A: Due to multiple campuses in Hastings, students will be able to select either a Station Plaza campus day or an Ore Valley/ATC campus day.

When you select your first subject, the system will then display only those subjects on the relevant campus you can choose from to timetable your day. We will be running a minibus between Ore Valley and ATC to transport students between these sites.

You are welcome to attend multiple days in Hastings if needed, however you will need to approve this with your school.

Q: Why can I only pick one date/location?

A: Your school has chosen dates for you to attend our Taster Days. Please check with your school which dates/locations they have signed you up to attend. If you wish to come on a different day or campus, you will need to select ‘Other’ from the drop down schools list and your attendance will need to be agreed with your school.

Q: My school isn’t listed/I am home-schooled.

A: If your school isn’t listed or you are home-schooled, please select ‘Other’ on the school drop-down list. This will then show you dates where there is still capacity to attend. If you attend on a date your school hasn’t agreed, your school will need to be contacted to agree to your absence.

Q: Why do I need to include a photo ID?

A: Photo ID is required for safeguarding purposes. With so many new faces during Taster Days, photo ID allows us to readily identify you if required.

Q: What is an appropriate ID photo?

A: The photo you provide should be easily recognisable. We need a clear headshot, similar to a passport image (with no filters applied).

They will only be used for security purposes during the Taster Day. If you do not submit a suitable photo your registration may be removed.

Q: Can I attend more than one campus?

A: If your school has chosen to attend multiple campuses (Hastings, Eastbourne and/or Lewes), you will have the opportunity to come to each campus.

Q: Can I do the same subject at different campuses?

A: A lot of our courses are offered at multiple campuses and run similar activities during Taster Days. We would advise trying out different options where you are interested to prevent repeating activities.

Q: Can I change my timetable?

A: You can make amends to your timetable up until Sunday 1st June by signing into your account. After this date timetables will be fixed and no amends can take place.

Q: What will the day involve?

A: Upon arrival, you'll register and proceed to your first taster session. This session will kick off with a warm welcome, followed by engaging activities. You'll participate in sessions 1 and 2, before breaking for lunch. During the break, enjoy live music with food on offer from our refectories. After lunch, you'll attend your 3rd and 4th session before concluding and heading home or back to school.

Q: Will I be allowed off campus?

A: You must remain on campus for the full Taster Day, between 9.00am - 2.45pm for safeguarding purposes. We have all the facilities you will need onsite.

Q: Will there be a representative from my school there?

A: Your school will decide whether they will be sending a representative and should let you know before the day. If there is not a representative from your school, there will be a helpdesk signposted on the day. If you need anything throughout the day, a member of East Sussex College staff will be available at the helpdesk to help.

Q: Do my parents need to attend?

A: Taster Days should be treated as a normal school day and parents do not need to be in attendance. If you are attending independently, your parents are welcome to drop you off and pick you up, but they will not be able to attend the Taster Day.

Q: Do I have to wear school uniform?

A: You do not have to wear school uniform for the Taster Days, but please make sure your outfit is suitable for a school environment. Specific requirements are necessary for the following courses:

  • Catering, Beauty and/or Hairdressing: long hair should be tied back
  • Uniformed Protective Services, Sport, Dance or Drama: Wear trainers and clothing suitable for sporting activities/that you can move freely in
  • All construction courses, engineering, motor vehicle: bring or wear sturdy footwear and clothes you do not mind getting dirty
  • Music in Lewes: please bring musical instruments with you, if appropriate

These requirements are for your own safety. If you do not dress appropriately, you may be asked to move to a different session.
