UEA, ranked 27th in the Times and Guardian University guides, will work with the College to validate the College’s HE programmes at Eastbourne and Lewes from September 2023. Alumnus Shares Journey from Sports Student to Media Sensation

After starting a personal training business, Dominic's career took an unexpected turn when he picked up a camera to create content for his business. That decision eventually led to the birth of DoMoreMedia, a creative agency that now works with major brands like DJI and Mountain Warehouse. “With an incredible amount of failure and mistakes along the way, I’m now shooting launch campaigns for companies,” Dominic shared, emphasising that persistence and learning from setbacks were crucial to his success.

Hair and Beauty Students Dazzle

At the end of March students from Sussex Downs College studying hair, beauty and media make up wowed audience members at their annual showcase. With an ‘Under the Sea’ theme, students were instructed to create looks which showed off their talents, but adhered to a specific brief. The excitement was hard to contain as the buzz of creative talent filled the room. On the catwalk, models sported oceanic body art, mermaid-inspired makeup and turquoise colour schemes.

WorldSkills entry showcases a creative cut and burst of colour

Beauty Therapist Kaiya entered WorldSkills and made it to the finals in Abu Dhabi in the 2017 competition. Kaiya won the gold medal for Team GB, earning her the title of World’s Best Young Beauty Therapist! History was made again in the WorldSkills Finals in Russia 2019, when Beauty Therapist Rebecca West brought home the gold for Team UK once again, seeing her crowned the World’s Best Young Beauty Therapist. East Sussex College hopes for the winning streak to continue in Shanghai.

Speaking on his course and where he hopes to be in the future, Hayden said, “My creative journey so far has spanned so many mediums, from digital posters to video game soundtracks, and even a 2D animated film... so narrowing down my aspirations is no easy task. I think the clearest goal for me, however, is to continue my academic studies into a University degree, to guide me toward even more opportunities and open doors for a career in the industry. No matter what path I take, though, I owe so many of my achievements to my tutors, peers and studies at Hastings.

“Students had to choose the colours which had different meanings in Kente symbolism; for example, blue represents peace and harmony. They designed their own patterns using different art medias. The Kente blanket was a great opportunity for discussion about diversity and celebration of Black History Month. It’s important for students to know that we all have the same rights to be happy, love, and be loved.”

College teams up with world-renowned architectural artist to launch ‘My Town’ art competition for second time

The competition gives students the chance to have their work published in the local press. All you need to do to enter is create a sketch, drawing or illustration in pen, pencil or ink. The medium should be paper, a sheet no bigger than A2 (420mm x 594mm, 16.53 x 23.39 inches), in a style similar to Stephen Wiltshire - preferably inspired from memory.

Krys Shiels: Away from the frontline

Krys’ second fundraising initiative is for transportation. “My brother has said there aren't enough vehicles to support the wounded,” Krys continues. “I’m trying to fundraise for a vehicle like a minivan which can transport the wounded away from the bombings and the shellings to relative safety where they can then recieve medical support.” It is this fundraising that is proving challenging, as it’s a huge amount of money to raise. Krys, however, remains optimistic.
