The attendees of the Jubilee themed event included young people from cadets, scouts, beavers, cubs, girl guides and brownie groups. Also in attendance were recipients of the Points of Light Award, Commonwealth athletes and representatives of Age UK.

Samuel provided current students with an opportunity to see firsthand that the pathway into the industry is there, as he achieved his goal and is now working as part of the ICE team.

At the Galicia Jewish Museum, students learned about the experiences of Jewish communities in Poland. The walking tour of Krakow’s Jewish District allowed them to see historical sites firsthand and reflect on the importance of diversity and inclusion today.

“I received the email last Monday to say that my application had been successful. I’m so happy and relieved because some of the financial barriers of university have been removed. It means I have more time to study and learn, rather than find part-time work to help with the cost of living.”

In what proved to be an invaluable experience for students, they had the opportunity to try on Tactical Firearms gear and were even able to sit in the City of London Police response cars.

Sport, Public Services, and Business students at East Sussex College Hastings transformed the Station Plaza campus into a Winter Wonderland last week to raise money for the college’s charity partner, St Michael’s Hospice.

I think Uniformed Public Services is an incredible course. It will teach you many different skills and qualities which can be fundamental in work and life. With a difficult current employment climate, those skills could be the difference between you and someone else getting a job. So, if you are unsure about what you want to do, my advice would be to study UPS so you can work out where you want to go in life!”

Vocational students studying Uniformed Public Services, Morgan Lewes-Clements and Leonie Rogers, received exceptional results and are looking ahead to careers in the public services industry. Morgan, who received D*D*D in Uniformed Public Services, said, “I’m very very happy with my grades. Honestly, support from our tutors was great. The support from my tutor was unreal, he couldn’t have done more, he helped us through everything! I’m looking to join the border force next September.”

Zak Prevett, a Level 3 Public Services student, really enjoys learning outside of the classroom.

Vocational student Abbey Cuttell studied Uniformed Public Services and achieved a fantastic Double Distinction* and Distinction: “I’m very excited about my result. I’m not exactly sure what I’ll be doing next, but I hope to do something medical - maybe a medic or dermatologist. The last few years have been amazing and my tutor has been absolutely brilliant, and I’ve made some awesome friends.”

Craig Ottley, Curriculum Lead for Sport and Public Services at East Sussex College Hastings, said, “We’re all really excited about undertaking this once in a lifetime opportunity. We’ve been training and trying to prepare ourselves for the physical task of sand dunes and bracing ourselves for temperatures above 30 degrees during the day and perhaps almost freezing at night.

“Because of issues surrounding security, vetting and age limits, work experience opportunities within public services are rare, but we think they are so important. We will rearrange things at a moment's notice to accommodate such experiences when the opportunities do present themselves. It's rare that you can get those experiences elsewhere.”

International mindset guru, Steve Sallis, visited ESC’s Station Plaza campus to speak to Business, Health & Social Care, Sports and Public Services students

As part of Safety in Action Week, East Sussex Fire and Rescue (ESFRS), supported by East Sussex College’s Uniformed Public Services (UPS) Level 2 & 3 students, hosted a dynamic activity day at the Sports Park.

Speaking on the College’s new partnership with Skiltek at their Eastbourne campus, Scott Raybould, Head of Curriculum for A-Levels, Sport & Public Services at ESC, said, “This is an exciting development for the Eastbourne campus and Skiltek to forge a successful partnership for years to come.

The College’s Hastings campus hosted a Remembrance Parade on 14th November. Classes watched from their floors and from the Atrium, as Public Services students paid their respects.

In Eastbourne, Nathan Jukes who studied Maths, Computer Science and Physics celebrated achieving A*, A, C grades. It wasn't just A-Level students receiving their results on the day. Vocational students also received their BTEC results, with excellent results on the popular Public Services courses, Childcare and Engineering. In Eastbourne, Conor Nicholls and Joshua Ndubuisi achieved triple Distinction* in Public Services, reflecting the outstanding results in this course area.

It has been shown that performance for students in further education is closely related to confidence and self-belief, as well as knowledge of the subject being studied. With this in mind, the department bid for funding from the OFS Uni Connect project, through the Sussex Learning Network, to employ the services of Zoe Carroll. Zoe, as well as being a Public Services tutor at ESC, is a life coach with a specialism in fear and confidence, and is using this role to help prepare students ahead of their assessments.

It wasn’t long before Pauline received donated materials - including buttons from someone in Essex - and support in making the headbands too. She has now produced 62 headbands, 32 mask bands and 31 scrubs wash bags. “I’m no longer a solo sewer - I have a small team!” says Pauline. “I now have colleagues from our Eastbourne and Lewes campuses helping me sew, so it’s turning into a real college group thing! I’ve also had some pretty material donated - the midwives loved the Disney Asristocats headbands I made! Someone also asked if I had a Just Giving page - and I directed them to the Hastings Sport and Public Services #ESC1900 page as I don't have one myself.”
