In 2022, the College became a Mental Health Committed Employer by signing up to the Workplace Mental Health Charter. "I already had a Facebook page, which I set up after a really challenging period in my life. When I was pregnant with my little boy, my partner and I were made homeless. It was such a worrying time, and I built up so much anxiety. My family lived 300 hundred miles away, and I didn't have much support. After giving birth, I had postnatal depression, and the only thing that kept me going was my little boy.

Industry placement scheme a success

Fifteen Health and Science students from the college have successfully completed a placement in a health or social care setting. The pilot project, created in partnership with the college, East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, the Learning Disabilities Team at East Sussex County Council and Health Education England, saw students spend one day a week for 10 weeks in the healthcare environment.

Maise Jarvis, a T-Level Health & Social Care student, achieved a Merit in her course. Reflecting on her results, she shared, “I’m really happy with my grades, I didn’t think that was what I would get so I’m very happy! I couldn’t have done it without my tutors, they were really supportive. I’m now going to work in a hospital and I’m hoping to do my university course through them! This course is a really good way into healthcare, because of the practical side of the course. Going forward, I see it being one of the best courses.”

Get ready for college... by doing some gardening

As well as improving mental and physical health, gardening is also good for the planet. Earlier this year, we joined a project to plant 6,000 hardwood trees, helping us to offset our carbon emissions. Over the next 20 years, these trees will be able to capture 60,000 tonnes of carbon!
