Beauty Therapist Advances in WorldSkills Competition

Mya had a real taste for competition, so she entered the WorldSkills Beauty Practitioner competition, where she once again qualified to be in the top eight in the county and sealed a place in the national finals, held in Blackpool in November 2022. Mya then went on to win highly commended in that competition.

Reflecting on reaching the national finals, Mya said, “I was encouraged to take part in the competition by my tutor, she supported me throughout the whole journey. I’ve done two rounds of the competition. The first round was day make-up and red manicure, and the second round was an evening make-up and facial massage.

WorldSkills entry showcases a creative cut and burst of colour

Beauty Therapist Kaiya entered WorldSkills and made it to the finals in Abu Dhabi in the 2017 competition. Kaiya won the gold medal for Team GB, earning her the title of World’s Best Young Beauty Therapist! History was made again in the WorldSkills Finals in Russia 2019, when Beauty Therapist Rebecca West brought home the gold for Team UK once again, seeing her crowned the World’s Best Young Beauty Therapist. East Sussex College hopes for the winning streak to continue in Shanghai.

Students on practical courses such as construction, engineering, motor vehicle and hair and beauty have been hit hardest, because it is most difficult to replace practical teaching through online delivery. English, maths and ESOL have seen varied engagement levels online, especially for lower-level students and those with special educational needs.
