Digital delight for students as they open their A-Level results

In Eastbourne, Nathan Jukes who studied Maths, Computer Science and Physics celebrated achieving A*, A, C grades. It wasn't just A-Level students receiving their results on the day. Vocational students also received their BTEC results, with excellent results on the popular Public Services courses, Childcare and Engineering. In Eastbourne, Conor Nicholls and Joshua Ndubuisi achieved triple Distinction* in Public Services, reflecting the outstanding results in this course area.

From ESC to the Paralympic Stage

While studying his A-Levels, Biology, Maths and PE, at Sussex Downs (now East Sussex College) in 2016, he was selected to join the British Triathlon Paralympic Talent Squad. Competing in the PTS4 category, Finley impressed early on, placing third in the British Triathlon Championships during his studies.

Success was also celebrated over in Eastbourne, where Accounting, Business and Maths student, William Jukes, achieved A* grades. Tigerlily Young was another high achiever, gaining three A* grades in English Language, English Literature and History.

OBE for ESC alumni

Josh’s supportive and entrepreneurial nature was evident from a young age. He was a Maths tutor to a family friend when he was just 13, and this quickly developed into tutoring friends of friends. At Cavendish School, he was Head Boy, and has been campaigning for the Liberal Democrats for 10 years, because to him, “politics is all about helping people”. He has also volunteered as a youth worker. “My youth work gave me an insight into young people and why they commit crimes. I launched my business, Cracked It, on the basis of working with these people.

Olivia Bounas achieved outstanding results in her A-Levels, with A*s in Business and Maths, an A in Graphic Design, and a B in her EPQ. “I’m very happy with my results. In September, I am going to Bath University to study Structural Engineering. I really liked my combination of courses as I have a creative/fun one and more of a mathematical one which really suits me. Advice to my past self would be to not stress out too much, not worry about the future, and don’t overload yourself.”

This is an exciting time for us to be involved in this partnership. We help people to get useful qualifications such as maths and English Functional Skills as well as qualifications that lead directly into work. These include SIA security badges and five year CSCS cards. Triple A grade student Lauren Taylor, 17, from Stonecross, is progressing to the University of Surrey to study Psychology, having achieved A grades in Psychology, Maths and Biology at Sussex Downs College. “I turn 18 next week,” says Lauren, “so it will definitely be a big occasion with double the reason to celebrate.”

Skills Led Recovery

Students on practical courses such as construction, engineering, motor vehicle and hair and beauty have been hit hardest, because it is most difficult to replace practical teaching through online delivery. English, maths and ESOL have seen varied engagement levels online, especially for lower-level students and those with special educational needs. Nearly three quarters (71%) of colleges are providing additional tuition over and above the tuition fund with many teaching over the Easter holidays to make up for lost learning.

Sussex Downs College Celebrates Results and A Triple Scoop of A Grades

Students scooping triple A*/A grades include Eastbourne students Nele Gewert, who achieved an A* in English Literature and A grades in Psychology and English Language. Daniel Hagan achieved an A* in Mathematics and A grades in Physics and Further Mathematics. Over at the Lewes campus, Jessica Green achieved three A grades in Philosophy, English Literature and Business. Roisin Fairbairn was awarded A* grades in Sociology and Communication & Culture, and an A in Psychology.

“Our young people are being short-changed compared with their counterparts in other countries and compared with previous generations. The hours of teaching and support, the choice they have, and the enrichment they are offered have all reduced as funding cuts have bitten. It is also a real challenge for us to pay competitive enough salaries to recruit staff in key subjects such as maths, science, engineering, and computing. This is something we are very excited to support. It will be an opportunity to dispel any myths about working in the NHS; it really isn’t just about doctors and nurses. We would like to make the students aware of the wide range of career opportunities available to them in the NHS. There are over 350 different careers available ranging from the clinical roles that most people associate with the NHS, to roles that they may not be so familiar with such as chefs, accountants, electricians and medical photographers.

Motcombe Pool Community Reconnects Through The ‘Listening Project'

Friends’ connections were rekindled, and new contacts were formed. A Community Interest Company (CIC) historian, Warwick P Davies, presented a graphic version of ‘The Story of Motcombe Baths’. The CIC provided visitors with an update on the regeneration plans and the opportunity to consult the team about the Pool rejuvenation project proposals and progress. It was an incredible opportunity for connections to be made and stories revisited.

Ahead of the Alumni pop-up events, Coast Restaurant Manager, Jakki Pransky, said, “These evenings are a wonderful opportunity for our current students to see firsthand what they can achieve after they leave our course. Rob and Marcus were studying at the College only a few years ago. With their passion, and the knowledge that they gained here, they have carved paths for themselves within the industry and continue to climb. They were more than happy to come back to the College for pop-ups and quite excited when I approached them with the idea.”
