The Maths and English department at East Sussex College Eastbourne has taken an innovative approach to students’ learning this academic year

Who’s sat there in maths and remembered the first time that your friend showed you how to write ‘hello’ on a calculator?

In Eastbourne, Nathan Jukes who studied Maths, Computer Science and Physics celebrated achieving A*, A, C grades. It wasn't just A-Level students receiving their results on the day. Vocational students also received their BTEC results, with excellent results on the popular Public Services courses, Childcare and Engineering. In Eastbourne, Conor Nicholls and Joshua Ndubuisi achieved triple Distinction* in Public Services, reflecting the outstanding results in this course area.

While studying his A-Levels, Biology, Maths and PE, at Sussex Downs (now East Sussex College) in 2016, he was selected to join the British Triathlon Paralympic Talent Squad. Competing in the PTS4 category, Finley impressed early on, placing third in the British Triathlon Championships during his studies.

Alongside his course, he achieved his English and Maths GCSEs. The workplace beckons for MJ and he is excited to be finishing College with a qualification and a bank of practical work, including the e-bike. As for the future of the bike?

Asad finished secondary school with a D grade in GCSE Maths. He now works in a highly numerical profession where 0.1 pence per litre can make the difference between a company being viable or a company closing down. Through his apprenticeship with Sussex Skills Solutions and learning the Certas way of working, Asad now has the numerical ability any professional would be proud of.

Success was also celebrated over in Eastbourne, where Accounting, Business and Maths student, William Jukes, achieved A* grades. Tigerlily Young was another high achiever, gaining three A* grades in English Language, English Literature and History.

Josh’s supportive and entrepreneurial nature was evident from a young age. He was a Maths tutor to a family friend when he was just 13, and this quickly developed into tutoring friends of friends. At Cavendish School, he was Head Boy, and has been campaigning for the Liberal Democrats for 10 years, because to him, “politics is all about helping people”. He has also volunteered as a youth worker. “My youth work gave me an insight into young people and why they commit crimes. I launched my business, Cracked It, on the basis of working with these people.

Olivia Bounas achieved outstanding results in her A-Levels, with A*s in Business and Maths, an A in Graphic Design, and a B in her EPQ. “I’m very happy with my results. In September, I am going to Bath University to study Structural Engineering. I really liked my combination of courses as I have a creative/fun one and more of a mathematical one which really suits me. Advice to my past self would be to not stress out too much, not worry about the future, and don’t overload yourself.”

In Eastbourne, Natalia Srodek achieved a fantastic two A*s and two A grades in Chemistry, Maths, Further Maths and Physics. Fellow classmate Abdulla Mohammad achieved an A* in Maths and A grades in Further Maths and Physics.

The East Sussex College Group delivers the ‘Go Further’ project which provides tailored help with subjects, such as maths; and matches students with relevant mentors who are able to encourage and direct students on their next steps.

This is an exciting time for us to be involved in this partnership. We help people to get useful qualifications such as maths and English Functional Skills as well as qualifications that lead directly into work. These include SIA security badges and five year CSCS cards. Recently, we’ve been able to forge relationships with several major building projects in the local area, which means we will be able to help place people directly into work.

“My time at the College was really good. I gained some really good qualifications in Fitness Instructing and Personal Training, as well as English and maths.

Triple A grade student Lauren Taylor, 17, from Stonecross, is progressing to the University of Surrey to study Psychology, having achieved A grades in Psychology, Maths and Biology at Sussex Downs College. “I turn 18 next week,” says Lauren, “so it will definitely be a big occasion with double the reason to celebrate.”

Students on practical courses such as construction, engineering, motor vehicle and hair and beauty have been hit hardest, because it is most difficult to replace practical teaching through online delivery. English, maths and ESOL have seen varied engagement levels online, especially for lower-level students and those with special educational needs. Nearly three quarters (71%) of colleges are providing additional tuition over and above the tuition fund with many teaching over the Easter holidays to make up for lost learning.

Students scooping triple A*/A grades include Eastbourne students Nele Gewert, who achieved an A* in English Literature and A grades in Psychology and English Language. Daniel Hagan achieved an A* in Mathematics and A grades in Physics and Further Mathematics. Over at the Lewes campus, Jessica Green achieved three A grades in Philosophy, English Literature and Business. Roisin Fairbairn was awarded A* grades in Sociology and Communication & Culture, and an A in Psychology.

I think this is a really good place to study because it has the course I wanted to do, which is Bricklaying, and it also gives me the opportunity to re-do my GCSEs in math and English, so that I can get a grade 4.

Skills for the Future will equip learners with the skills, knowledge and behaviours to enable them to return to work in fulfilling careers. The delivery of new courses includes the Inside Track programme, Sprint courses and qualifications in English and Maths.

“Our young people are being short-changed compared with their counterparts in other countries and compared with previous generations. The hours of teaching and support, the choice they have, and the enrichment they are offered have all reduced as funding cuts have bitten. It is also a real challenge for us to pay competitive enough salaries to recruit staff in key subjects such as maths, science, engineering, and computing. This cannot continue if we are to secure the future of our nation.”

“Having already met my cast mates from our photoshoots and a social event we attended, I am so ready to get started,” said Sonny. “They are all wonderful people with immense amounts of talent, many of whom you will recognise from various west end shows and tours around the UK! It is truly thrilling to be sharing a stage with this special group of performers.”

On Wednesday morning, auctioneer David Mathewson arrived on campus to meet the students, hear about their work, and take the car back to Yorkshire for auction and further restoration if the new owner wishes to take the car to the next level.

“Becoming part of the Clipper family has been a joy. The camaraderie developed between the first mates, skippers and crew means my journey will end with lifelong friendships being forged in adversity.”

This is something we are very excited to support. It will be an opportunity to dispel any myths about working in the NHS; it really isn’t just about doctors and nurses. We would like to make the students aware of the wide range of career opportunities available to them in the NHS. There are over 350 different careers available ranging from the clinical roles that most people associate with the NHS, to roles that they may not be so familiar with such as chefs, accountants, electricians and medical photographers.

We hosted pop-up apprenticeship workshops at our campuses in Eastbourne, Hastings, and Lewes to encourage young people to ‘Look Beyond’ some of the myths about apprenticeships and see the diverse range of available roles.

Along with our stellar music line-up (which we will come onto in just a second), we’ve got plenty of festival fun happening. Challenge your mates to a game of Last Man Standing, hop in a giant inflatable bubble and zorb on water, win some prizes on our funfair stalls, learn to sing during a vocal coach workshop, and get your glitter on in our festival hair and make-up tent.

It is filled with eye-catching landscapes and full of myths and legends about a French hermit dragon slayer that once lived there. A beautiful and peaceful place to walk full of magic and mystery.

Can you assemble a championship-winning Baseball team built on stats? Yes, you can if you’re Billy Beane and the Oakland A’s. Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill team up to buy new players on a lean budget using computer-generated analysis. A great watch, particularly if you’re a mathematician or a sports fan.

For Kiki, the highlight of her time at East Sussex College has been the friendships she’s made along the way. “The highlight of this course was getting to perform alongside the amazing friends I have made. Studying drama allows you to connect to the people on your course much quicker than usual, as you are constantly opening yourself up emotionally in the work you're doing, which creates great mates that are up for a good laugh.”

Amber Morey and Abbi Enstone, two aspiring filmmakers and students at ESC Eastbourne, were excited to do their work experience at Racquet Studios, a renowned film studio in Sussex. Their placement provided them with the opportunity to develop their passion and learn about virtual production, operate camera equipment, and gain a deeper understanding of the film industry.

Charlie has set his sights on diverse career paths, including the Civil Service, Teaching, or working for a Non-Governmental Organisation involved in Politics. His ambitions reflect his commitment to making a meaningful impact in society.

The event offered an invaluable opportunity for students to connect with construction industry professionals, enabling them to discuss career paths, gain insights into industry expectations, and explore potential job opportunities.

Speaking further about the benefits of the course, Chris said, “This course offers me better opportunities and gives me different paths I cant take down the line. The new rail track equipment is very impressive. It’s very useful and a great hands-on way to learn and understand how the track comes together.

Friends’ connections were rekindled, and new contacts were formed. A Community Interest Company (CIC) historian, Warwick P Davies, presented a graphic version of ‘The Story of Motcombe Baths’. The CIC provided visitors with an update on the regeneration plans and the opportunity to consult the team about the Pool rejuvenation project proposals and progress. It was an incredible opportunity for connections to be made and stories revisited.

“I am immensely proud of our learners for always showing respect, positivity, and such strength during our fundraising events. They didn’t let the hottest day of the year hold them back nor the muddy paths we came across. They are an inspiration. It was an honour to give St Wilfrid’s our donation, they are a wonderful charity, helping so many people and always being so welcoming and accepting of our learners, it was great to be able to give something back.”

“This was an invaluable experience for our T-Level students,” comments Rachel Willmer,Course Lead for the Accounting T-Level at East Sussex College. “They now realise that there are other financial services roles that they can consider in addition to the more traditional accounting career paths. We are grateful to Maxine for freeing up some of her time to provide students with this insight.”

Mark Streeter, Deputy Head of Curriculum for Engineering and Motor Vehicle at East Sussex College, said, “This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to see how the skills they’re learning in the classroom are applied in a professional environment. Visits like this inspire students, helping them understand the career paths available to them and the standards required in the industry.”

The three-day event kicks off on Wednesday 13th November, at 10am, with East Sussex College proudly sponsoring the flagship “Meet the Media” show. Set for 12pm on Thursday 14th November, this feature invites students to interact with a panel of media professionals, receiving expert advice and insights to help guide their future paths in the industry.

Ahead of the Alumni pop-up events, Coast Restaurant Manager, Jakki Pransky, said, “These evenings are a wonderful opportunity for our current students to see firsthand what they can achieve after they leave our course. Rob and Marcus were studying at the College only a few years ago. With their passion, and the knowledge that they gained here, they have carved paths for themselves within the industry and continue to climb. They were more than happy to come back to the College for pop-ups and quite excited when I approached them with the idea.”
