Beauty Students Shine in WorldSkills National Finals

“During the competition I had to do a surprise make-up look. On the day they gave me a picture which I had to copy. The photo consisted of a nude lip and a dark Smokey eye; I then had to do a galvanic facial and choose the correct settings to benefit my client’s skin. We had a mystery task which we got given and straight away had to go into it - this was a leg cleanse and scrub, then a massage. I had to adapt as if my client had knee surgery six months before.

At the end of March students from Sussex Downs College studying hair, beauty and media make up wowed audience members at their annual showcase. With an ‘Under the Sea’ theme, students were instructed to create looks which showed off their talents, but adhered to a specific brief. The excitement was hard to contain as the buzz of creative talent filled the room. On the catwalk, models sported oceanic body art, mermaid-inspired makeup and turquoise colour schemes.

Krysta Shiels, 43, is a mature student of Ukrainian origin, studying her Level 2 Certificate in Make-up at East Sussex College Hastings. In early March, desperate to support Ukraine following the Russian invasion, Krysta set up fundraising events to accrue donations to send money and resources back to her home country in support of her friends and family.

Exhibited alongside the Dalek was the Tardis, created by Carpentry students at the Hastings campus. Fashion students from Eastbourne showcased their designs and a showreel by Media students played throughout. “I’m not a massive Dr Who fan, but I did watch it as a kid. This project started off as small showcase piece, but it is now a great advertising tool. From its makeup, it shows students how you spray cars, how to make mouldings, what electronic bits do. It’s been good fun,” Poil said.

We adapted and moved our college lessons online, set up video calls via Google Meet, and collected work via Google Classroom. Our students embraced it and even produced some incredible end-of-year pieces of work. We loved seeing hair, beauty, and make-up makeovers, online magazines, and online art exhibitions.

Winners Indigo-Pacha Reynolds (Costume Design) and Jaina Chandler (Marketing Strategy) were joined by Maia Poole-Wilson and Viola Doncheva, who were both commended for their outstanding work in Set and Costume Design respectively. Summer Baker, who received a commendation in Hair, Wigs and Make-Up Design, was sadly unable to attend.

Kaiya Swain is ready to represent the UK in the WorldSkills Final

“I knew I wanted to work in the Beauty industry when I was at school,” she says. “I came along to the College Open Event and loved everything about it . I also liked that I could study a combined course in Hair & Beauty and Theatrical Make-up. I started the WorldSkills training in 2014. Having advanced through the stages of the competition, my training now mimics the WorldSkills set up. Everything has to be perfect. This competition has bettered me as a therapist, making me more employable and setting me a bar above the standard therapist. I believe that through hard work and determination there is nothing that you can’t achieve in the beauty industry. Going to Abu Dhabi is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I intend to enjoy every moment of it.”

For the love of Prom

The Prom Showcase, for Year 10 and Year 11 students, will be held at the Lewes campus of East Sussex College on Wednesday 26th February. The event will include a catwalk of hair and beauty looks and prom fashion. Kate Smith, Head of Curriculum for Hair, Beauty and Make-up at ESC, explains: “We wanted to create an event that highlights the training and skills acquired on our hair and make-up artistry courses. The catwalk element will also feature stunning prom wear by Our Little Secret prom and bridal boutique.”

Phoebe Ociepka-Tearle, also an Art & Design Extended Diploma student, was highly commended in the Marketing Strategy & Design category for her highly imaginative poster and animation. Ryan Skeel was commended in the Marketing Strategy & Design pathway for his stunning poster and animation, while Sophie Fish, a Beauty and Make-Up student, was commended in the Hair, Wigs & Make-Up pathway for her wonderful work for the character ‘Papageno’.

Each of the open events will take place from 5:00pm until 7:30pm and will be jam-packed with activities. Along with live musical performances, guests can also expect to get involved with live cooking demonstrations, investigate a road traffic collision, take part in personal training sessions, experience virtual reality gaming, watch a make-up tutorial, and record their own music track.

Student Art in Festive Fair

The Art & Design students from East Sussex College will use the Artists & Makers Fair to raise funds for their Royal Opera House Challenge work to be displayed in the exhibition space at the Star Brewery Gallery, Lewes in February 2023. The Royal Opera House Challenge is a nationwide competition, giving students across the country the opportunity to design sets, costumes, hair, wigs and make-up, or develop a marketing campaign for an opera or ballet, selected by the Royal Opera House. The Royal Opera House Design Challenge 2023 is based on Mozart’s ‘The Magic Flute’. The students’ work will be exhibited locally at the Star Brewery Gallery, before making its way to London for the competition.

Meg Sullivan, an A-Level Photography Teacher at East Sussex College, says, “Our students were inspired by the work of Muholi, and the stories of the Bloomsbury Group who were able to feel at ease in the Firle countryside. The students have looked at issues around gender and identity and have taken these photographs in the last two months in response. You can see men with make-up, women portrayed with male characteristics, stereotypes, role models and suffragette tears, as the students show you what they think it is like to be emancipated in the twenty first century. It is worth pondering to consider what the original suffragettes, and residents of Charleston, would have made of it all.

Skills Led Recovery

Students on practical courses such as construction, engineering, motor vehicle and hair and beauty have been hit hardest, because it is most difficult to replace practical teaching through online delivery. English, maths and ESOL have seen varied engagement levels online, especially for lower-level students and those with special educational needs. Nearly three quarters (71%) of colleges are providing additional tuition over and above the tuition fund with many teaching over the Easter holidays to make up for lost learning.

Wynter is coming

Wyntercon VI is the Wyntercon charity’s largest annual convention and has a new home for 2019. Eastbourne Sports Park, based at East Sussex College, will welcome popular cult, sci-fi and fantasy exhibitors for a weekend of family-friendly events. Fans of the sci-fi and fantasy genre will find a little of everything at Wyntercon. East Sussex College will showcase their very own working dalek, a collaboration between various departments in the college including engineering and construction. Make-up Artistry tutors and students will also be on hand to demonstrate special effects make-up, as seen at Eastbourne’s Zombie Walk.

Team UK, made up of the country’s top young students and apprentices, flew home on Wednesday (28th August) in a cloud of gold and glory after competing in the WorldSkills Finals in Kazan, Russia. Among them, bringing home the gold for Team UK, was East Sussex College Lewes alumni, Rebecca West.

Lewes Students Present End-of-Year Showcase

The show, made up of first- and second-year student work, is a celebration of achievements during an extremely difficult year. The Lewes campus has numerous accolades, including continued success in the prestigious Royal Opera House Design Challenge, Young Landscape Photographer of the Year winner, an exhibition of student work at the Jubilee Library during Brighton Festival, and collaborative projects with Human Nature, Culture Shift and Phileas Fogg World of Adventures. Students have also had the opportunity to help film live coverage and interviews during the UEFA Euros, and produce VR tours of work environments for students of SEND schools (Special Educational Needs & DIsabilities). The end-of-year show is a celebration of all this and more.

The Prince’s Trust Team Revamps Youth Centre Space

As part of their course, the team, made up of nine young adults aged 17-24, chose to support Charlie’s Youth Access Centre for their community project. They raised an impressive £291 over three days of fundraising. This included cycling the distance from Eastbourne to London in the Sussex Downs College gym, a sponsored walk along Eastbourne seafront, from Holywell to the sewage centre and back, and a cake sale held in the College canteen. Following their successful fundraising, The Prince’s Trust Team set to work, revitalising the basement space, making it accessible for centre users once again.

East Sussex College invests £1m to support local communities

Team East Sussex (TES) is the local federated board for the South East Local Enterprise Partnership (SELEP Ltd). Membership of Team East Sussex is made up of business, local authority, social enterprise and education representatives from across the county. Four of the TES members also hold the position of Company Director of SELEP Ltd. The focus of TES and SELEP is to support local strategic growth priorities, encourage business investment and promote economic development.

East Sussex College once again named as the best further education college in the country for international students

The college was ranked as the highest placed Further Education provider for its Lewes and Eastbourne campuses, only bettered by 14 other organisations, predominantly made up of private language schools. The college has held the top position for eight years.

Training for the Future

For the competition, Design, Surveying & Planning T-Level students worked on a real client brief. Once completed, the venue will train future cohorts in green technologies, which makes up part of the College’s work in decarbonisation. The decarbonisation project sees the College collaborating with OHM energy, a Sussex company specialising in renewable energy. Future training at the new hub will cover multiple renewable energy initiatives, including heat pumps, solar energy, electric vehicle charging points and retrofitting older properties. This exciting new initiative will ensure the future workforce is equipped with the knowledge and skills in cutting-edge green technologies.
