In particular, Krys cites her make-up artistry tutor, Celina Zomer, as “a godsend, a phenomenal, amazing person. She’s the primary person I have to thank for the fact that I get up in the morning and keep on going. I read the news and it breaks my heart. But I still have the strength to go to College because she’s going to be there and she’ll look at me in a kind way. It means the whole world to me. I cannot imagine being in a better place than the College.”

East Sussex College Hastings Media Make-up artistry student, Krysta Shiels, is a member of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB) and has been active in fundraising and supporting Ukraine since the Russian invasion one year ago.

Crafting elaborate decor and stunning makeup designs, the students welcomed over 100 guests to immerse themselves in the darkly enchanting world of Tim Burton's cinematic universe. From interactive displays to costume contests, attendees were treated to a range of activities celebrating Burton's iconic style.

“This Dalek shows how many things make up a complete mechanical product,” Liz continues. “It’s so good for students, as it takes curriculum learning as a basis, but they also learn to work in a different way, when there’s tasks to create. We want young people to be creative; it’s equipping them with vital skills and it’s what employers need. “

We’re social beings; it’s in our genetic make up. So it’s no wonder we all feel better when we have social contact with other people. The past year has been tough because we’ve not had the same level of interaction with our friends and family.

Outside the classroom, the students experienced a makeup demo at Brighton’s M.A.C store, Brighton Pier, the De La Warr Pavilion and traditional fish ‘n’ chips at Harry Ramsden’s.

Throughout the valuable seminar, students were encouraged to ‘make up their own mind’ and ‘step out of their own thoughts’, with a view of seeing things from a different perspective. Students were also asked to evaluate the importance of; happiness or money, character or calibre, and confidence or competence.

“During the competition I had to do a surprise make-up look. On the day they gave me a picture which I had to copy. The photo consisted of a nude lip and a dark Smokey eye; I then had to do a galvanic facial and choose the correct settings to benefit my client’s skin. We had a mystery task which we got given and straight away had to go into it - this was a leg cleanse and scrub, then a massage. I had to adapt as if my client had knee surgery six months before.

Young drivers (17-24 years old) aged 17-19 only make up 1.5% of UK licence holders, but are involved in 9% of fatal and serious crashes where they are the driver.

“For instance, one of the aspects of the competition was makeup, which at first put Mya at a major disadvantage, as makeup was not something she had studied at college during her first year of Beauty Therapy. Instead of giving up, Mya attended makeup lessons during her own time, and after only four lessons, she managed to create a look that impressed the judges enough to gain her a place in the top eight national finalists!”

Locally, it provides the Art & Design Extended Diploma, Animation & Illustration and Beauty & Make-Up students from ESC Lewes the opportunity to test and develop their marketing, production and creative design skills based around a production.

“I started at the Lewes campus in 2013 and began studying Hair and Theatrical make-up, then moved on to Beauty and then I decided to stay on an extra year to complete my Level 3 in Beauty Therapy. I finished in 2016, but I was able to go back to use the facilities and train for the World Skills competition.”

The college Hair and Beauty students will be showcasing the finest hairstyles, prom-style make-up, and beauty treatments during this special prom evening in Lewes. Prom and bridal wear specialists Our Little Secret will also be showing off their finest dresses.

At the end of March students from Sussex Downs College studying hair, beauty and media make up wowed audience members at their annual showcase. With an ‘Under the Sea’ theme, students were instructed to create looks which showed off their talents, but adhered to a specific brief. The excitement was hard to contain as the buzz of creative talent filled the room. On the catwalk, models sported oceanic body art, mermaid-inspired makeup and turquoise colour schemes.

Krysta Shiels, 43, is a mature student of Ukrainian origin, studying her Level 2 Certificate in Make-up at East Sussex College Hastings. In early March, desperate to support Ukraine following the Russian invasion, Krysta set up fundraising events to accrue donations to send money and resources back to her home country in support of her friends and family.

At the Station Plaza campus in Hastings, visitors arrived on the scene of a road traffic collision which brought together elements from the Make-up Artistry, Motor Vehicle, and Public Service courses, they were put through their paces during a range of fitness testing, and they were able to understand the importance of having a balanced and healthy diet in the college kitchens.

Call of Duty - Modern Warfare - An online battle royal lets gamers practise tactics and stealth as they enter a warzone. Teamwork and problem solving make up a huge part of the online multi-layer element. It's tense, demanding but ultimately so rewarding.

Models hit the catwalk styled by the students themselves, who had worked hard behind the scenes to bring their futuristic visions to life – from bold makeup looks to intricate hairstyles and themed outfits.

Students were able to register for their tickets online and enjoy three hours of live music, free food and drink, festival games, and festival hair and make-up. A handful of competition winners were also able to enjoy an exclusive meet and greet with the celebs.

This year, the project challenged students to design around Giacomo Puccini’s 1896 masterpiece, La bohème. There were four categories to enter; Set Design, Costume Design, Hair, Wig and Make-up Design, and Marketing Strategy and Design.

In total, Josh’s paintings took about 160 hours of work starting with the initial drawings then digitally transferring them onto Photoshop and creating the many different layers that make up each image.

The students then joined tutors from East Sussex College Lewes who gave masterclasses in drawing techniques, set design, and how to create a range of theatrical and special effects make-up, including prosthetics.

Exhibited alongside the Dalek was the Tardis, created by Carpentry students at the Hastings campus. Fashion students from Eastbourne showcased their designs and a showreel by Media students played throughout. Make-up Artistry students and staff demonstrated special effect make-up and prosthetics, creating realistic looking injuries on visitors.

The annual Design Challenge competition runs in the Autumn term and invites students from colleges and universities across the country to compete in four categories; Set Design, Costume Design, Hair, Wig and Make-up Design, and Marketing Strategy and Design.

“I’m not a massive Dr Who fan, but I did watch it as a kid. This project started off as small showcase piece, but it is now a great advertising tool. From its makeup, it shows students how you spray cars, how to make mouldings, what electronic bits do. It’s been good fun,” Poil said.

“Holding Wyntercon VI at Eastbourne Sports Park lets us work with College staff and students in a creative, hands-on aspect,” explains Andy Kybett, Wyntercon Founder. “We look forward to working with course areas including Construction, Theatrical Make-up and Art and Design throughout the year.”

We adapted and moved our college lessons online, set up video calls via Google Meet, and collected work via Google Classroom. Our students embraced it and even produced some incredible end-of-year pieces of work. We loved seeing hair, beauty, and make-up makeovers, online magazines, and online art exhibitions.

Winners Indigo-Pacha Reynolds (Costume Design) and Jaina Chandler (Marketing Strategy) were joined by Maia Poole-Wilson and Viola Doncheva, who were both commended for their outstanding work in Set and Costume Design respectively. Summer Baker, who received a commendation in Hair, Wigs and Make-Up Design, was sadly unable to attend.

“I knew I wanted to work in the Beauty industry when I was at school,” she says. “I came along to the College Open Event and loved everything about it . I also liked that I could study a combined course in Hair & Beauty and Theatrical Make-up. I started the WorldSkills training in 2014. Having advanced through the stages of the competition, my training now mimics the WorldSkills set up. Everything has to be perfect. This competition has bettered me as a therapist, making me more employable and setting me a bar above the standard therapist. I believe that through hard work and determination there is nothing that you can’t achieve in the beauty industry. Going to Abu Dhabi is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I intend to enjoy every moment of it.”

The Prom Showcase, for Year 10 and Year 11 students, will be held at the Lewes campus of East Sussex College on Wednesday 26th February. The event will include a catwalk of hair and beauty looks and prom fashion. Kate Smith, Head of Curriculum for Hair, Beauty and Make-up at ESC, explains: “We wanted to create an event that highlights the training and skills acquired on our hair and make-up artistry courses. The catwalk element will also feature stunning prom wear by Our Little Secret prom and bridal boutique.”

Phoebe Ociepka-Tearle, also an Art & Design Extended Diploma student, was highly commended in the Marketing Strategy & Design category for her highly imaginative poster and animation. Ryan Skeel was commended in the Marketing Strategy & Design pathway for his stunning poster and animation, while Sophie Fish, a Beauty and Make-Up student, was commended in the Hair, Wigs & Make-Up pathway for her wonderful work for the character ‘Papageno’.

Each of the open events will take place from 5:00pm until 7:30pm and will be jam-packed with activities. Along with live musical performances, guests can also expect to get involved with live cooking demonstrations, investigate a road traffic collision, take part in personal training sessions, experience virtual reality gaming, watch a make-up tutorial, and record their own music track.

The Art & Design students from East Sussex College will use the Artists & Makers Fair to raise funds for their Royal Opera House Challenge work to be displayed in the exhibition space at the Star Brewery Gallery, Lewes in February 2023. The Royal Opera House Challenge is a nationwide competition, giving students across the country the opportunity to design sets, costumes, hair, wigs and make-up, or develop a marketing campaign for an opera or ballet, selected by the Royal Opera House. The Royal Opera House Design Challenge 2023 is based on Mozart’s ‘The Magic Flute’. The students’ work will be exhibited locally at the Star Brewery Gallery, before making its way to London for the competition.

Meg Sullivan, an A-Level Photography Teacher at East Sussex College, says, “Our students were inspired by the work of Muholi, and the stories of the Bloomsbury Group who were able to feel at ease in the Firle countryside. The students have looked at issues around gender and identity and have taken these photographs in the last two months in response. You can see men with make-up, women portrayed with male characteristics, stereotypes, role models and suffragette tears, as the students show you what they think it is like to be emancipated in the twenty first century. It is worth pondering to consider what the original suffragettes, and residents of Charleston, would have made of it all.

Along with our stellar music line-up (which we will come onto in just a second), we’ve got plenty of festival fun happening. Challenge your mates to a game of Last Man Standing, hop in a giant inflatable bubble and zorb on water, win some prizes on our funfair stalls, learn to sing during a vocal coach workshop, and get your glitter on in our festival hair and make-up tent.

Students on practical courses such as construction, engineering, motor vehicle and hair and beauty have been hit hardest, because it is most difficult to replace practical teaching through online delivery. English, maths and ESOL have seen varied engagement levels online, especially for lower-level students and those with special educational needs. Nearly three quarters (71%) of colleges are providing additional tuition over and above the tuition fund with many teaching over the Easter holidays to make up for lost learning.

Wyntercon VI is the Wyntercon charity’s largest annual convention and has a new home for 2019. Eastbourne Sports Park, based at East Sussex College, will welcome popular cult, sci-fi and fantasy exhibitors for a weekend of family-friendly events. Fans of the sci-fi and fantasy genre will find a little of everything at Wyntercon. East Sussex College will showcase their very own working dalek, a collaboration between various departments in the college including engineering and construction. Make-up Artistry tutors and students will also be on hand to demonstrate special effects make-up, as seen at Eastbourne’s Zombie Walk.

Team UK, made up of the country’s top young students and apprentices, flew home on Wednesday (28th August) in a cloud of gold and glory after competing in the WorldSkills Finals in Kazan, Russia. Among them, bringing home the gold for Team UK, was East Sussex College Lewes alumni, Rebecca West.

The team, made up of Driver 1 Jayden Brunsdon, Driver 2 Robert Mason, and Course Leader Ian Golledge, arrived at the Williams F1 HQ without any issues - a smooth start compared to last year’s journey!

The show, made up of first- and second-year student work, is a celebration of achievements during an extremely difficult year. The Lewes campus has numerous accolades, including continued success in the prestigious Royal Opera House Design Challenge, Young Landscape Photographer of the Year winner, an exhibition of student work at the Jubilee Library during Brighton Festival, and collaborative projects with Human Nature, Culture Shift and Phileas Fogg World of Adventures. Students have also had the opportunity to help film live coverage and interviews during the UEFA Euros, and produce VR tours of work environments for students of SEND schools (Special Educational Needs & DIsabilities). The end-of-year show is a celebration of all this and more.

Pianjo & Co is made up of six students aged 16-18, studying the Pre-Professional Music course at ESAM, run by East Sussex Music at Sussex Downs College in Lewes.

Pianjo & Co, the band made up of six students studying the Pre-Professional Music course run by ESAM, at Sussex Downs College in Lewes, were put forward to play at the Proms after performing at the Music for Youth National Festival in Birmingham, back in July.

A team of 21, made up of 14 members of staff and 5 students, tackled the 13.1-mile course on a surprisingly sunny Sunday morning while being cheered on by supportive colleagues.

As part of their course, the team, made up of nine young adults aged 17-24, chose to support Charlie’s Youth Access Centre for their community project. They raised an impressive £291 over three days of fundraising. This included cycling the distance from Eastbourne to London in the Sussex Downs College gym, a sponsored walk along Eastbourne seafront, from Holywell to the sewage centre and back, and a cake sale held in the College canteen. Following their successful fundraising, The Prince’s Trust Team set to work, revitalising the basement space, making it accessible for centre users once again.

A big part of our course is made up of trips and work placement. We’ve been on some really great trips to see how public services operate and gain an insight into what it will be like to do those jobs. We were also able to source our own work experience placements so we can build up our experience ready for when we start our careers.

How many of you have not only forgotten your homework but also made up an elaborate excuse as to why you’ve forgotten it or couldn’t complete it on time? You know, the old ‘my dog ate it’ - but even more elaborate than that.

We used to think of stress-related illnesses as something a bit woolly or made up. Actually, the many impacts of stress on your physical body have been well documented.

I’ve been an assessor here at the hotel for over 10 years. We’ve had many learners completing Level 2 to Level 3 qualifications, from the kitchen restaurant to front of house at reception. Michelle [the hotel manager] is a really good ambassador for apprenticeships and progression through her team.”

Team East Sussex (TES) is the local federated board for the South East Local Enterprise Partnership (SELEP Ltd). Membership of Team East Sussex is made up of business, local authority, social enterprise and education representatives from across the county. Four of the TES members also hold the position of Company Director of SELEP Ltd. The focus of TES and SELEP is to support local strategic growth priorities, encourage business investment and promote economic development.

The college was ranked as the highest placed Further Education provider for its Lewes and Eastbourne campuses, only bettered by 14 other organisations, predominantly made up of private language schools. The college has held the top position for eight years.

For the competition, Design, Surveying & Planning T-Level students worked on a real client brief. Once completed, the venue will train future cohorts in green technologies, which makes up part of the College’s work in decarbonisation. The decarbonisation project sees the College collaborating with OHM energy, a Sussex company specialising in renewable energy. Future training at the new hub will cover multiple renewable energy initiatives, including heat pumps, solar energy, electric vehicle charging points and retrofitting older properties. This exciting new initiative will ensure the future workforce is equipped with the knowledge and skills in cutting-edge green technologies.

The main way to support yourself to relieve stress, aid sleep, build your immune system and ensure your body is working to its best is through diet! Eating fresh, home-cooked food made from scratch is the best way to eat healthily. Try and cut out or lower the amount of processed food, caffeine, alcohol, sugar, and fatty foods during times of stress. Our bodies are made up mainly of water, so it is important to stay hydrated. Being hydrated boosts mood, energy and supports all bodily functions.

I decided to take up running again as my gym was closed. I'd joined our Hastings Sport and PUS ESC1900 challenge, and it really helped. Being active is a huge support to your mental health, you don't have to start training for a marathon, but a brisk walk or cycle along the seafront can do wonders and really lifts your mood.

Try setting your bedtime and wake-up time according to the number of hours of sleep you are currently getting- then gradually increase it every couple of nights. This will squeeze out the middle of the night-time awakening and gradually increase the amount of sleep you get during the night.

A final decision on who will take up the apprenticeship is expected soon, with the successful candidate starting in September.
