Alumni to Premiere Musical at Famous New York Nightclub

Joe and Frankie’s musical is set to be performed at 54 Below on 23 August at 9:30pm. As described on the 54 Below website, ‘the show follows three young people attempting to navigate through life’s hardships whilst striving for a sense of belonging. It tackles important issues and personal battles such as accepting your own sexuality, feeling like you’re not good enough for the world, and fighting to achieve one’s dreams and goals by any means necessary. The show consists of four different sections introduced by original poetry, providing a narrative for the songs that follow.’

This month, internationally respected tenor, Mark Padmore, performed for ESAM students at the Lewes campus, talked about his work and held a Q&A with students. The talented tenor, who is currently working on two world premiere operas and is seen as one of the best tenors in the world, was also a guest artist for the Berlin Philharmonic in 2018. His daughter, Maisie Simon Padmore, 18, is currently a student with ESAM.

If not, then there are six weeks worth of virtual festivals to get you social dis-dancing. Dozens of DJs played sets from their homes around the world, but our favourite stream was 'Defected Virtual Festival 5.0' which featured Danny Howard, Sonny Fodera and Claptone. Acclaimed guitarist in Concert

She is a celebrated musician who trained under some of Spain’s most acclaimed guitarists and holds a Master of Performance from the University of Alicante. She tours the world with her guitar, playing works by Tárrega, Albéniz, Granados, Falla, Turina and Rodrigo (to name a few). Born in Cartagena, Spain, Isabel’s passion for classical guitar shines through all of her performances.

Five ways to be young, wild and free

Confined to the house in lockdown needn’t be boring. Put on your favourite music and dance like nobody’s watching. Dancing is great exercise and can burn around 700 calories in an hour. Plus, it releases endorphins (those feel-good chemicals in the brain). Studies have found that dancing for just five minutes can boost happiness improve creative-thinking patterns. There isn't anyone to witness your moves, so do what comes naturally.

The soundtrack to this colourful day was provided by a number of talented musicians studying at Sussex Downs College. A designated music space was sponsored by the College, complete with hay bales for the audience and a stage for performers to entertain the crowd. Reaching for the Stars

Away from East Sussex College, Jordan has been training at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, every Saturday for the past four years, on their Cat [Centre for Advanced Training] scheme. Like most things during lockdown, his training went virtual: “We graduated on Zoom and that was a very different experience. It was lovely as we had so many guest stars come on and chat to us - really famous choreographers and dance artists. That made the experience amazing.”

Aspirational students celebrate A-Level Results

“I’m really overjoyed,” said Lewes A-Level student, Maia Woolf, who achieved an incredible four A* grades in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Music. A bright future awaits the talented student, with Cambridge or Warwick University in her sights. Talking about studying during lockdown, Maia says, “It’s been really crazy and quite demotivating a lot of the time because of the COVID pandemic. I’m so thankful for the amazing effort all my teachers put in to make sure we could have the best education, but it has been really challenging to do so much online, especially in practical subjects. In fact, it was more meaningful this year, as it meant my tutors believed that I was working at that grade, even when I wasn’t quite sure that I was!

Speaking to the College in October about her involvement in the BBC show, Anubis said, “It’s kind of surreal to be fair. I’ve been watching the show for seven years and I’ve always loved musical theatre, always loved drag, I’ve loved performing and music, so this show obviously incorporates all my passions. I auditioned for it quite a while ago and then luckily got on and now here we are today! It’s great, but very surreal!”

East Sussex College has offered Degree courses for over 25 years. The HE department celebrates continuing outstanding achievements as each cohort graduates into the industry sectors it serves. Former HE student, Nicole Marshall studied Music Production and Creative Recording (BA Hons) in Eastbourne. Nicole, under the stage name Nikki Cislyn, won an Ivor Novello Award and Grammy Award (2015) for writing and featuring on Clean Bandit’s Number One hit single, ‘Rather Be’.

Vegan Festival Lewes featured a recognised speaker, informative exhibitors, samples of vegan food from vegan-friendly businesses, as well as vegan health and beauty products. This year, Old Town Carnival week takes place from Saturday 3rd August until Sunday 11th August. It is a week of fun, and slightly crazy, events that bring the whole town together for a laugh. You can expect to see Pram Racing, treasure trails, walking tours, art shows, live music, and street parties, which all culminate in a Grand Carnival Procession at the end of the week.

Alumna Joins West End’s 'Cabaret' After Inspiring Return as Guest Lecturer

“The impressive performing arts facilities at East Sussex College were the main reason for choosing to study there,” Alex shared. “As well as being able to complete two academic A-Levels, I could maintain a high level of performance training and get qualifications in not only dance but also musical theatre. When attending the open day, teachers were so passionate about their work - it was an incredibly inspiring day. The training I had at East Sussex College set me up for the many auditions for performing arts conservatoires and university accredited colleges I attended for further education in my field.

Celebrating Earth Day

The installation was also a fundraiser that benefits the planet and a local charity at the same time! A donation area has been set up for Warming up the Homeless, where people are encouraged to donate their unwanted clothing instead of throwing them away, where they end up in landfills. The same group also showcased various green inventions designed to lower their carbon footprint, including a solar powered synthesiser for music! Visitors to the installation could also purchase seeds to encourage growing plants and wildflowers for our bees.

When asked whether he’d recommend the Performing Arts course at ESC to young, aspiring actors, Charlie said, “Definitely. Even if you aren’t sure if you want to be an actor, the environment and teaching style are so geared towards young people having the space to understand what drives them, what they’re interested in and what they could want to do. The Performing Arts building was always so buzzing with actors, singers and musicians - you got a taste for everything!”

Plumbing tutor completes marathon in his back garden to raise money for charity

“I started a little after 11am and the first few laps felt good. However, I soon realised that the 'hop up' onto the decked part of the garden would cause a little more muscle fatigue as the afternoon went on. To avoid too much repetitive strain, I also changed direction every 100 laps so I could use different muscles.
