“My photography tutor told me about the competition and it sounded like an amazing opportunity, one that could hopefully open doors for me in the future, so I entered,” said the former Ratton School student.

Art & Design and Photography students from East Sussex College celebrate a successful art installation at Charleston

Art & Design and Photography students from East Sussex College present an exhibition of art, sculpture and photography at Charleston Farmhouse next week (14th-24th March)

Josh said, “When I started photography a few years ago, I had no idea what it would lead to. Having my work displayed in a solo exhibition feels amazing and it’s really motivating and exciting to see what I can do next with photography.

Joe chose to study Media, Photography, and PE at East Sussex College because these subjects aligned with his love of sports, cameras, and technology. While his A-Level combination wasn’t the most conventional, Joe believes in the value of making strategic choices from a young age.

Meg Sullivan, an A-Level Photography Teacher at East Sussex College, says, “Our students were inspired by the work of Muholi, and the stories of the Bloomsbury Group who were able to feel at ease in the Firle countryside. The students have looked at issues around gender and identity and have taken these photographs in the last two months in response. You can see men with make-up, women portrayed with male characteristics, stereotypes, role models and suffragette tears, as the students show you what they think it is like to be emancipated in the twenty first century. It is worth pondering to consider what the original suffragettes, and residents of Charleston, would have made of it all.

I studied Music, Musical Theatre, and Photography and was able to go on some really great trips. Studying photography comes in really handy now with getting bits for Instagram and social media. I’d definitely say that my time at college has helped to set me up for what I’m doing now.

Following the ceremony, students provided live music and photography, and guests enjoyed refreshments and photo opportunities with the iconic Grand Hotel as a backdrop.

This vibrant show will include painting, printmaking, mixed media and photography displayed in a variety of locations including the café, shop and public lavatories as well as a number of sculptures on display in the beautiful Charleston gardens.

The exhibition features the work of Fine Art, Art & Design, Fashion Textiles and Photography students at the college, and includes self portraits, construction pieces and landscapes.

The Awards are presented in several categories including painting; sculpture, mixed media, textiles, photography, and works on paper. There are also two other awards for Art on the Move and Surrealism.

The other Art degrees include: Animation Arts & Visual Effects, Designer Maker, Fine Art, Graphic Design, Illustration and Photography.

Eddie Flyte was over the moon with his two As and a B from his three A-Levels in Photography, Media, and English Language to get him into the University of Sunderland to study Film and Media studies.

“The first year included a series of more or less introductory courses to the Fine Arts. So we dabbled in Photography and making negatives, then we did clay modelling, which was great fun. Then we learned Photoshop, which was fun, but not really for me.”

A special thank you was also extended to Courtney and Tom for being part of the exhibition and sharing their stories, as well as A-Level Photography student Crystal Armstrong for organising the photographs.

The ceremony celebrated their hard work and dedication in earning degrees in BA (Hons) Music & Production, BA (Hons) Fine Art, BA (Hons) Business, BSc Complementary Healthcare, BA (Hons) Designer Maker, BA (Hons) Photography, BA (Hons) Illustration, and Computing!

Artists of all ages are warmly invited to explore and express their bond with the natural world, their community, and the spirit of spring through various artistic mediums. Whether it's painting, drawing, photography, linocut, collage, print, or any other 2D artwork, participants are encouraged to convey their heartfelt sentiments about this inspiring theme.

The fifth floor at our Station Plaza campus has been transformed into a live exhibition space and features the work of over 50 young artists from our BA (Hons) courses in Animation, Designer Maker, Fine Art, Graphics, Illustration, and Photography.

She styled her way through the photographic heat of the competition and will travel to Barnet & Southgate College, in London, on Friday 3rd May to compete for a place in the grand final.

Finally, the students lined up for photographs and selfies with their MP – something that many students commented would not happen in their own countries of origin.

On shoot days, Joe borrows cars from dealerships or viewers, extensively photographing and filming them. “We take static shots before driving the cars to take notes for written features and record our ‘piece to camera’ while driving for the video,” he explained. The variety and creativity in the role are what Joe enjoys most, as he combines his passion for media with his love of cars.

Please note: By entering, all individuals will be agreeing to have their photographs and their work displayed in local press, on the College website and in the College newsletter which is distributed to over 50 schools and colleges throughout East and West Sussex.

Matt added, “A huge thanks to all of the students involved in the playing, setting up and preparation of the night along with media students who filmed and photographed, Racquet Studios and Music dept staff team who gave so much to make this happen.”

Jordan pauses to offer Liz the remaining brownie, so there is nothing left to attract the wasp. It remains around us, however, this time taking an interest in the photographer’s camera. Jordan continues, unperturbed, happy to talk about the challenges of lockdown and results day as he can now put it all behind him.

On Results Day, students will enjoy refreshments and have the option to celebrate and share their stories. Staff will be present to provide support and answer any questions about future plans. The day will conclude with confetti-filled photographs to celebrate the achievements.

Media students helped film interviews with a number of storytellers which formed a listening project at the Motcombe Pool site. Visitors shared memories and stories of how Motcombe Pool impacted their life and their family’s over its 118-year history. Photographs and memorabilia were exhibited and interviews were recorded. It was a wonderful opportunity for connections to be made and stories revisited.

The show, made up of first- and second-year student work, is a celebration of achievements during an extremely difficult year. The Lewes campus has numerous accolades, including continued success in the prestigious Royal Opera House Design Challenge, Young Landscape Photographer of the Year winner, an exhibition of student work at the Jubilee Library during Brighton Festival, and collaborative projects with Human Nature, Culture Shift and Phileas Fogg World of Adventures. Students have also had the opportunity to help film live coverage and interviews during the UEFA Euros, and produce VR tours of work environments for students of SEND schools (Special Educational Needs & DIsabilities). The end-of-year show is a celebration of all this and more.

Further Education (FE) and Higher Education (HE) Music students performed as part of the Midway High line-up at the Grove Theatre in Eastbourne last Friday (24th March). The event featured a fantastic mash-up of music genres and styles, with money raised to support the Syria and Turkey earthquake appeal. The gig was filmed and photographed by Media students at the College.

Sue McKinney, head of marketing at Chandlers Building Supplies said: “Trevor and Sam can always be relied on to go the extra mile. They threw themselves into the daily challenges posed by this year’s rally with typical enthusiasm. As well as persuading a crowd of Harley Davidson bikers to dance the conga, they convinced an Austrian policeman to photograph them in the back of his car and they also both got tattoos!”

This is something we are very excited to support. It will be an opportunity to dispel any myths about working in the NHS; it really isn’t just about doctors and nurses. We would like to make the students aware of the wide range of career opportunities available to them in the NHS. There are over 350 different careers available ranging from the clinical roles that most people associate with the NHS, to roles that they may not be so familiar with such as chefs, accountants, electricians and medical photographers.
