Skills Led Recovery

Students on practical courses such as construction, engineering, motor vehicle and hair and beauty have been hit hardest, because it is most difficult to replace practical teaching through online delivery. English, maths and ESOL have seen varied engagement levels online, especially for lower-level students and those with special educational needs. Nearly three quarters (71%) of colleges are providing additional tuition over and above the tuition fund with many teaching over the Easter holidays to make up for lost learning.

The work of 10 students was presented in the competition, including Louisa Scarabelli. She says, “I originally studied Health & Social Care, but after working a summer job in Construction in Brighton, I changed courses. I did some research online and came across the T-Level. I’m one of only two girls on the course but I love it. Construction is exciting! After my course, I hope to go into the industry.”

Wyntercon VI is the Wyntercon charity’s largest annual convention and has a new home for 2019. Eastbourne Sports Park, based at East Sussex College, will welcome popular cult, sci-fi and fantasy exhibitors for a weekend of family-friendly events. Fans of the sci-fi and fantasy genre will find a little of everything at Wyntercon. East Sussex College will showcase their very own working dalek, a collaboration between various departments in the college including engineering and construction.
