Engineering students have Trebuchet project displayed at Bodiam Castle

“The mini jousting and mini trebuchet games were especially popular with families. Having the life size trebuchet, designed by the students at ESCH, inside the castle courtyard helped families to further develop their understanding of what life would have been like during medieval times. The National Trust as an organisation is increasingly keen for properties to work in partnership with their local community groups and so we were delighted to have the opportunity to make this link between Bodiam Castle and ESCH.”

“Sadly, I was never picked up by British Athletics but was asked to try out for British Triathlon instead and a couple of other sports. I couldn’t swim very well and had never been on a bike before… based on testing and my running, British Triathlon felt I had potential to compete at a future Games. I couldn’t pass up on the opportunity so I decided to make the switch and learnt to swim and cycle from scratch.”

During the Open Event at the Ore Valley campus in Hastings, prospective students were able to get hands-on with a range of construction activities that included building brick walls, connecting electrical circuits, and creating decorative effects with the college logo. The students were also able to immerse themselves in the virtual world as computing students demonstrated their Virtual Reality gaming technology.

Top Teacher

Stephanie has a varied role in the team leading the Lewes campus summer programmes, as well as part time and one to one courses. But she is also one of the senior English language teachers in their outstanding international team and is a frequent contributor to team development activities. Last year she had a feature article published in English Teaching Professional advocating the use of a variety of authentic native-speaker games in the EFL classroom to support the acquisition of language. Recently she has won the monthly lesson share competition on the popular Macmillan One Stop English teaching/resource website. Stephanie’s lesson looked at collocations –words that naturally sit together and help to make an English language learner sound more natural and fluent: eg have a party, do an experiment, take your time, make an excuse. The lesson includes an innovative colouring activity to consolidate mastery of the language point.

Based on the bestselling books by Leigh Bardugo, the fantasy series has been dubbed ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ meets ‘Game of Thrones’, and creator Heisserer has already been teasing plans for a second series.

A lot of people think fame means wealth and unfortunately it doesn't. It does happen. It’s like Grime is one of the biggest music genres in the UK. The guys that have been the most successful come from a really good family; they went to college, and have university degrees so they know how to use equipment in a recording studio, but they’re not gangsters from off the street. You do get the odd ones, sure, but usually these are on the back of someone who did go to university and became good sound engineers. It’s an act to sell music, pretending to be a gangster. BBC3 programme The Rap Game with five budding rap artists. They’re the nicest guys you’ll meet but their music says something completely different. I was a rap artist in the ‘90s. I had a group called 141st Street, which was quite big in the old days of Kiss FM. We were signed to Virgin Records. I’ve rapped on stage with the Beastie Boys at Reading Festival, and I’m not a gangster.

Morgan James performed on the Saturday, playing two sets by popular demand either side of local talents Isabella Bradley & Tom Hurn and Grace Ridger from Hastings. There were special guest appearances from Glastonbury’s Emerging Talent Competition 2019 winner, Marie White, who will be off to the festival to perform at the end of June, as well as ex-student and double Grammy award winning Nikki Marshall, who has had success with ‘Rather Be’ the biggest selling single in 2015 for Clean Bandit & Jess Glynne.

Aspirational students celebrate A-Level Results

Hastings students celebrating their results included Samantha Richards, Martha Sankey and James Stringfellow. Two had chosen the Humanities pathway (Samantha achieved an A* in Psychology, and Martha achieved A* grades in English Literature, Geography and History), while James achieved fantastic A* grades in Chemistry, Maths and Physics.
