Speaking on the positive support from teachers and the draw of having an education in Hastings, May said, “Our teachers are brilliant. They are really easy to get along with. I feel like if I was doing any other course it would feel like I’m still at school, but because the Art Diploma, especially in Hastings, it’s a really good place for the art scene and for music and everything.

Rising Talent Exhibition

Art & Design Diploma student Chloe Laforest had her work featured in Charleston's 'Home' exhibition earlier this year. Her installation has been reconstructed for Rising Talent (this time it's on dry land) and depicts the plight of refugees who have fled their homes in search of a safe haven, but the grim reality is that many lives are lost at sea.

Meanwhile, Art & Design students took part in Collaborate + Exchange, an exciting pop-up exhibition at the Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft (25 & 26 March). The student work was in response to the Museum’s current exhibition, ‘Shōji Hamada: A Japanese Potter in Ditchling’. Students received positive feedback from visitors. The work is now being displayed in the foyer of Eversley House at the Eastbourne campus for staff, students and Open Event visitors to see.

We are delighted to announce that Sussex Downs College in collaboration with The Charleston Trust have brought together a contemporary and innovative art exhibition to be staged at Charleston Farmhouse from Wednesday 14th March until Sunday 18th March. Students studying the Art & Design Diploma and Photography Subsidiary Diploma at Sussex Downs College, Lewes, were required to respond creatively and imaginatively to their project theme of ‘home’.

College winners pick-up Royal Opera House Design Challenge awards

The three winners were joined by the 2020 winning candidate, Charlotte Dance, who was crowned the winner of the Set Design category with her piece themed around Giacomo Puccini’s 1896 masterpiece, La bohème. At the time of the 2020 awards, Charlotte studied Level 3 Art & Design at ESC Lewes. Charlotte had to wait an extra year to pick-up her well-deserved award!

Students Rise With The Phoenix

Last month, 11 groups of students presented their ideas to a live audience, which included representatives from Human Nature, Councillor Adrian Ross, Chair of Lewes District Council, and Guy Sweeney, Economic Development and Regeneration Officer at Lewes District Council. The students, who study Animation & Illustration and Art & Design, came up with 3D models, designs for ‘parklets’ - small green spaces that include seating and bike parking, and created films to share their ideas with the audience.

Creative students win

Eden Hedges, 18, from, Heathfield, was announced the winner in ‘Marketing Strategy & Design’. Laurel Pearce, 18, from Eastbourne, won the Highly Commended Award in the same category, while Felix Scott, 17, from Eastbourne, won the Highly Commended award for ‘Set Design’. All three students are currently in their second year of the OCR Cambridge Technical Diploma in Art & Design.

Students Prepare to Showcase Creative Talents

Students studying Art and Design, Music and Media are set to be heavily involved in three major upcoming events over the next month as part of their studies: The Towner, Eastbourne Alive and The Turner Prize.

Since studying the Art and Design course and specialising in Textiles, I've learnt how to sew. Before the course, I had no clue. On my first day, I sewed my jacket to the machine. I didn't know what I was doing. But now, I'd say I'm semi-confident, and I can sew quite well. I never knew how to do screen printing or operate a heat press before either. But being able to use those pieces of machinery at college, and being guided by my tutors is brilliant. They're able to help me to develop certain techniques that I wouldn't otherwise know how to do. If you saw somebody doing it, you'd never know the name, you'd never know how to do it, or what steps you need to take to do it. The Internet is a brilliant thing, but you can't type in questions if you don't know what you're looking for. But having people who study it, know it, and live it, it's a world easier because they know what they're doing and they know all these techniques just by looking at it, and how it's done.
